BioShock 2 Remastered for PC is a remastered version of the second installment of the popular BioShock series developed by 2K Games. It is a first-person shooter game seasoned with RPG elements. The title is available as a standalone production as well as a part of the BioShock: The Collection compilation.
Plot
The action of BioShock 2 Remastered takes place eight years after the events presented in the original BioShock. The player, yet again, gets to visit the city of Rapture — an underwater metropolis established as an utopian shelter for the humanity’s finest. The troubles started with the discovery of ADAM — a mysterious element that gives its user supernatural abilities and, at the same time, causes irreversible mutations of their organism. It was the direct cause of the outbreak of a civil war which resulted in the fall of the city.
The main protagonist is Object Delta — one of prototype Big Daddys. These powerful creatures were created to protect Little Sisters which, in turn, are tasked with acquiring ADAM from the bodies of dead Rapture citizens. Delta was entrusted with looking after Eleonora Lamb, the daughter of Sofia from the first installment of the series. Ten years after committing a suicide, the hero is resurrected by his ward. His primary mission is to rescue the teenager from her own mother who tries to convert her into a personification of her ideals.
Similarly to the first BioShock, the plot is non-linear and is enriched with new storylines as it progresses. Moreover, the decisions we make are yet again reflected in one of several alternative endings. Once more, we learn the historical background thanks to the so-called audiologs — recordings that inform of events that occurred in Rapture in our absence.
Mechanics
The gameplay of BioShock 2 Remastered for PC focuses on exploration, solving varied puzzles, and fighting encountered hostiles. For the purposes of the game, the developers prepared a number of new locations such as Fontaine Futuristics which is a kind of a ADAM processing plant. Walking around the ocean floor is possible thanks to a diver suit that the protagonist wears.
Given that we do not assume the role of an ordinary man but a Big Daddy prototype, the developers managed to introduce many changes and enhancements to the gameplay. The protagonist stands out from among his kin with the ability to use Plasmids — the aforementioned supernatural abilities that let us, for example, control elements or use telekinesis. Apart from splicers and other Big Daddys, which aren’t challenging for the Object Delta to defeat, we can encounter new adversaries: the so-called Big Sisters. They appear once we have dealt with all Little Sisters in a given location. Big Sisters not only are incredibly fast and agile but also well-equipped so facing them can prove difficult even for such behemoth as the protagonist. Luckily, we have an expanded weapon arsenal at our disposal — Object Delta uses, among others things, firearms, the giant drill, and the powerful pneumatic Rivet Gun. Moreover, Plasmids and firearms can be used simultaneously which vastly increases the variety of options on the battlefield.
Game modes
Apart from the single player campaign, BioShock 2 Remastered features an additional mode called The Protector Trails. It offers special challenges that are meant to check our combat skills. In each attempt, we can make use of one of four weapon and Plasmid configuration, and our task is to defend a Little Sister from incoming subsequent waves of enemies, while she is busy acquiring ADAM from a body. It’s worth noting that even though the original BioShock 2 featured a multiplayer mode, BioShock 2 Remastered does not.
Technical aspects
Compared to the original BioShock 2, BioShock 2 Remastered for PC boasts with sharper textures and a native support of the 4K resolution. Since the title is powered by Unreal Engine, the three-dimensional art-deco-styled graphics still look good.
