After the decline in popularity of its flagship series, TalonSoft began work on a new series, initiated by the East Front and West Front, which took place during World War II. Their moderate success, however, caused that after a short break, the artists returned with a full-fledged continuation of the Battleground cycle. This is the fifth time that the game with the ninth title touches on the theme of the Civil War, which is loved by Americans. This time it was decided to recreate the course of the fights that took place in September 1863 on the Chickamauga River, called by the Indians "The River of Blood".
The bloody three-day battle ended with the victory of an army of Confederates led by General Braxton Bragg over the Union forces led by William Rosencrans and George H. Thomas. Despite the victory, the troops of southerners suffered huge losses in this battle - almost 30% of killed, missing and wounded soldiers and 10 generals. This led to a significant weakening of the Confederates, who, as it later turned out, had not managed to rebuild their power until the end of the war.
Battleground 9 traditionally allows you to recreate the course of the entire battle or to focus on one of a large number of scenarios - both historical and hypothetical. It is invariably up to the players to choose which side of the conflict they want to stand for. The mechanics of the game is maintained in a style characteristic of the series, which can appeal to both hard-working strategists and beginner players. Like popular board games, the action takes place on a hexagonal map. It depicts to the smallest detail the area of warfare. As in previous editions of the series, an important role is played by the historical figures of commanders and the armament and uniforms of the army, which have been recreated with particular reverence.
Battleground 9: Chickamauga uses a new generation of Battleview engine tuned for the East/West Front series mentioned in the introduction. Thanks to this, the game graphics have clearly improved, although this has resulted in an obvious increase in hardware requirements. The interludes typical of the series have also been prepared in much better quality. After years of interruptions, TalonSoft's developers restored an extensive mission editor, allowing you to significantly extend the time spent with the game. Following the spirit of the times, to the modes already known from previous versions of the game via the Internet or e-mail, the option of playing through the local network and competition at one computer on a shared or split screen has been added.
