Airborne Assault: Red Devils Over Arnhem Description
Airborne Assault: Red Devils Over Arnhem is a strategy game set in the realities of World War II, played on an operational level. A player can take command of British Red Devils paratroopers trying to take control of a strategically important bridge in Arnhem over the Rhine River, or of German troops trying to prevent the use of the bridge by Allied forces. The game is the work of the American company Big Time Software, which is responsible for the creation of the revolutionary Combat Mission war series. Like other Big Time Software products, the reality of that time and the geographical layout of 1944 were reproduced with great accuracy.
Airborne Assault introduced a number of innovative changes in relation to the fossilized, turn-based competition. Airborne Assault has moved away from turks and hexes, the game is played in real time, but you can pause the action and set different speeds to suit your tastes. More than 440 combat units take part in the battles, starting from a single platoon upwards; each one is detailed, not only in terms of firepower, but also in terms of morale, supplies, combat fatigue, aggression, fanaticism, experience, commander's skills, formation, equipment, mobility and a number of other factors. What's more, the player doesn't have to give orders all the time to individual units, which are involved in battles by several hundred (which often kills the game), but he can give control of selected units of advanced artificial intelligence. In fact, it puts us in the position of the Commander-in-Chief, who gives orders to several of his subordinates, and the rest is taken over by A.I. The whole idea of the game is based on the presentation and simulation of the command structure.
A very powerful "ScenMaker" editor has been added to the game, allowing players to do their own scripts. It is possible to play one player against a computer opponent, and multiplayer against living opponents, via the local network and the Internet.
