Age of Decadence is an extensive turn-based RPG for PC set in a post-apocalyptic world with slight presence of magic. The developers, Iron Tower, confirmed that their interesting universe and its history was inspired by the fall of the Roman Empire.
Plot
The action takes place several hundred years after the fall of a mighty empire that was attacked by the brutal Q’antaari. After many years of constant war and death of thousands of soldiers, the invaders decided to call the help of Gods of Chaos and their blood-thirsty armies. In response, the Archmages of the Empire called divine creatures that managed to defeat the demonic rivals and cast them out into the Abyss. The battle of the immortals was disastrous to the world of humans, though, and led to the fall of both Q’antaari and the Empire. After many years, these events are treated solely as legends, while all humans strive for are politics and power. However, one day, the protagonist finds an ancient map that can lead him to learning the secrets of the past. Wanting to discover what actually happened in the centuries past, he embarks on a long journey through grim areas and ruined cities that are only shadows of their former glory.
Mechanics
In Age of Decadence for PC, we have several character classes at our disposal, these include a knight, mercenary, and merchant. Naturally, all have their unique strengths and weaknesses and thus require a different approach to the gameplay. Our own hero can master 23 skills that include abilities useful for those who prefer melee combat as well as for thieves or diplomats. To some extent, we can also rely on magical talents but these aren’t as important as in most fantasy games. The skills we possess set the path to completing quests. For example: a character with well-developed diplomacy will choose a peaceful solution, while a strong warrior will most likely draw his weapon rather than engage in a discussion. Most missions can be performed in various ways, and our decisions have an impact on the further course of the game and lead to one of seven alternative endings.
There is a myriad of items to be found, including armor, weapons, scrolls, tools, and even pre-ware relics. Moreover, each of the eight kinds of weapons (daggers, swords, axes, hammers, spears, bows, crossbows, throwing weapons) have their strengths and weaknesses. The developers prepared an extensive system of crafting that lets us not only enhanced the equipment we have but also to create completely new artifacts. The combat system is also quite complex — attacking specific body parts of our opponents has different results.
While performing over a hundred of quest available in Age of Decadence, we will traverse twenty two types of locations, including cities, outposts, digging sites, underground factories, and temples.
Technical aspects
The game is powered by Torque Game Engine thanks to which we move through a detailed, fully three-dimensional world. The developers also put in a lot of effort into faithful recreation of character behavior and recorded over two hundred unique animations.
