It soon turns out that the only piece of software able to stop him is the game’s protagonist – a small white man, known as The Chosen One. Equipped only with his Magic Hat he sets out on a journey across various regions in order to put an end to the tyrant’s rule.

A Pixel Story is a 2D platform game, which combines several art styles in a unique fashion. The player assumes the role of The Chosen One, who has to save the world from the designs of Evil OS. The game was developed for PS4, PC and XONE by Lamplight.

Plot

The world in which A Pixel Story is set is the inside of a computer system. As one of many programs you live a peaceful life simply doing your everyday job. One day, however, this well-established order gets interrupted as a new ruler emerges. This one, known as Evil OS, takes total control over the virtual reality and imposes his cruel rules on other applications. Soon it turns out that the only piece of software able to stop him is the game’s hero – a small white man, known as The Chosen One. Equipped only with his Magic Hat he sets out on a journey across different regions in order to put an end to the tyrant’s rule.

Mechanics

At its core A Pixel Story, released for PS4, PC and XONE, is a classic platform game, in which the protagonist uses his cunning and agility to move from one location to another. A unique gameplay feature, which makes this classic experience a bit different, is the aforementioned hat. Thanks to that the hero can easily teleport himself to where he left the hat. This way you can reach hardly accessible places. Also, many of in-game puzzles are based on this special ability. The game features no physical opponents, however, each level is filled with varius puzzles. In A Pixel Story, death has many faces and can come at any time.

Technical aspects

Another unique innovation in the game is the artwork. You start the adventure in a very simple, 8-bit reality, but the world evolves as you progress. Each of the four zones, which consist of individual levels, is more detailed than the previous one. This solution represents the evolution that video games went through over the years, which also corresponds with the title’s main theme.
