Adventure | point-and-click | 2D | indie games | singleplayer

A New Beginning is a classic two-dimensional point-and-click adventure with hand-drawn graphics. The game is prepared by Daedalic Entertainment, a German company, developer of the Deponia series and publisher of such productions as Machinar or Ankh: Battle of the Gods. The title was originally released in 2010 on PCs, and a few years after the premiere it was also converted to mobile platforms with Apple iOS. A version of the game for Nintendo consoles (Wii and 3DS) was also planned, but it never appeared.

Fabula

A New Beginning refers to tragic events from a distant future, namely from the year 2500. Humanity was on the verge of extinction, and the only chance to save a declining civilization was to organize a journey into the past in order to change the course of history and prevent catastrophes that were to take place. Several volunteers are assigned to this task. The mission of the first group of scientists ends in a complete failure, however, as it moves on to 2050, when the global catastrophe could no longer be prevented.

As you can easily guess, the proper action of the game presents the story of the second expeditionary group, which was able to move even more into the past, because until 2008. The main plot is related to the figure of the scientist Bent Svensson, who decided to retire quite recently - in his own opinion, but not fully deserved. Despite his intensive work, he was unable to complete his life's work, i.e. develop an alternative method of generating energy. The game begins shortly after a girl named Fay arrives at Bent's estate, claiming that she comes from the future. It warns the scientist against losing and wasting research results that could fall into the wrong hands. Svensson decides to trust the girl and try to complete his project, and getting to know the rest of the story depends solely on the player himself.

Mechanika

Just like in many traditional point-and-click adventures, in the game A New Beginning we move between static locations, collecting the necessary items and solving another diverse puzzles. During the adventure we also meet more than 30 independent characters, and with each of them you can talk, thus obtaining important for the development of the plot information.

Technical issues

The whole is characterized by an aesthetic, hand-painted graphic design, and the player's subsequent progress is depicted through interestingly realized intermittent scenes. At the same time it is worth noting that the versions of the game for each hardware platform offer the same content, and the main differences boil down to a different control model (i.e. mouse in the case of PCs and touch screen in the case of mobile platforms).
