A Day in the Woods Description
A Day in the Woods, released on AND, iOS and PC, is a 3D puzzle game in which we play as the Red Riding Hood and help her reach her grandmother's house. The production, inspired by classic sliding puzzles, is the first serious work of an independent RetroEpic Software studio from South Africa.
Mechanics
In A Day in the Woods, we take control of the Red Riding Hood, the protagonist of a fairy tale written by Charles Perrault, and many years later made famous by the Grimm brothers. The goal of the game is to help the character reach the grandmother's house with as few moves as possible. The action takes place on small maps, divided into hexagonal fields. We move on the board by sliding the hexagon with the Red Hood into free space. The mechanics bring to mind the popular - especially among children - sliding puzzles.
The game offers an extensive campaign consisting of sixty levels. While the first few levels won't cause trouble to anyone, the completion of the next ones is quite a challenge. Not only because of the limited number of movements, but also because of the numerous dangers. The latter include bears, spiders and wolves. The player must skillfully place enemies around the board while helping the heroine to collect berries and flowers that affect the overall level score.
Technical aspects
A Day in the Woods makes an excellent impression in terms of graphic design. 3D levels, objects and character models look like they were made out of wood, and the whole thing brings to mind a scene from a puppet theater. The fairy tale soundtrack works very well with the overall aesthetic.
