9th Dawn III: Shadow of Erthil is the third installment of a series of retro action RPGs launched in 2012. The game was developed by an independent Valorware studio (also responsible for the two previous parts of the series) and is mostly the work of one developer.
Plot
9th Dawn III: Shadow of Erthil takes us on a journey to the fantastic land of Cedaltia. During the game, we play the role of a daredevil who arrives near Lake Elmson to investigate mysterious, ghostly phenomena. At the site, the hero learns about the sinister ruler and is announced the chosen one to face him in the castle of Lorwyck. In this way, the protagonist becomes entangled in an intrigue of a powerful caliber, which leads him into the very heart of the dark prophecy.
Mechanics
In 9th Dawn III: Shadow of Erthil the action was shown from the top-down view. The game gives us a huge open world, where you will find, among other things, the vast fields of Ashwick, the snowy region of Halstom and the gloomy mountain peaks of Scorn, the dense forests of Vlak, and the endless mazes of the underworld. Travelling through these diverse locations, we perform tasks pushing the plot forward, perform numerous side missions and face hordes of monsters wandering around Cedaltia.
There are more than 270 types of enemies in the game, and during real-time battles we have to rely not only on the combat skills and weapons of the hero (or spells, if we decided to play the mage), but also on our own agility and reflexes. As we progress, we develop the protagonist, unlocking more and more powerful abilities, gaining valuable equipment (we can choose from more than 300 types of weapons and 550 accessories and armouring elements) or acquiring resources allowing us to create new elements of the equipment or improve the existing ones. In addition, the game allows us to recruit monsters, which then take an active part in the fight; their combat potential increases with time, so it is worth taking care of them.
During the breaks from the great adventure we can indulge in side activities; among them we can find fishing or Fyued - the original card game for which 180 unique cards were developed.
Game modes
9th Dawn III: Shadow of Erthil allows you to play alone or in a local co-op mode.
Technical aspects
9th Dawn III: The Shadow of Erthil has a simple two-dimensional graphics, which does not differ in quality from the previous parts of the series. The game does not look particularly impressive, but it makes up for the shortcomings in this area with the offered content. You may like the soundtrack, which creates an atmosphere of a great adventure full of dangers.
