Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The best movies of 2021
Table of Contents
- Genre: a fantasy comedy and another (sic!) installment of the Ghostbusters cult classics - exceptionally well-made, unlike some mishaps in the lineup
- Director: Jason Reitman
- Where to watch: Unfortunately, at the time of writing this, the movie was not available in cinemas or online.
Our list wouldn't be complete without another approach to the already iconic Ghostbusters brand. It would seem that filmmakers reach for such themes when the box office is empty, and you need to somehow attract the audience to the theatres. And there must be something to it, because if it hadn't been part of the franchise, I would probably not have went to see Afterlife. And then I'd kick myself for it.
The new Ghostbusters is a really good, solid movie that has some issues but performs above average in most fields. It's the classic New Adventure Cinema for young viewers, interwoven with many references to pop culture of the 20th and 21st century. Above all, Afterlife really does make the viewer feel the legacy of the series. During the screening, I felt as if I had stepped back in time and had my first adventure with the Ghostbusters. Other times, I would perhaps complain about the movie being repetitive, but here everything was tastefully composed.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife has been made by Jason Reitman - a director with no outstanding works, but with one important advantage that no one else could acquire: he is the son of the creator of the original Ghostbusters. I don't want to go into how much it could have influenced the final shape of the new installment. However, I know that sometimes the cinema - but not only - needs something more apart from high skills, craftsmanship and savvy. A… spirit.
