Are you surprised to see what game won our collective editorial heart in 2019? Probably yes, because Disco Elysium turned out to be a real black horse in the bunch. The project, created by ZA/UM, which had no industry portfolio before, did not arouse much interest before the launch, attracting attention mainly among the biggest fans of indie games and RPGs.
Meanwhile, it was this inconspicuous role-playing game that outclassed all other RPG, such as The Outer Worlds, Greedfall or Code Vein, this year, taking us to the retro-futuristic world and letting us play the role of a policeman that has hit the moral rock bottom. And we mean real rock bottom, not the usual “drunk junkie scumbag ready to do the worst” routine. The protagonist’s only chance to redeem himself is through our decisions. But we don't have to make them at all, we may as well let him rot as a thrash, sealing his fate.
Disco Elysium throws a ton of texts to read at us. It presents a morally degenerate world in which good and evil are rather abstract constructs. It strongly avoids combat, and when we manage to find one despite the difficulties, it decides to solve it through dialogue windows. The game delights with its intelligent storyline, atmosphere and maturity. It gives a huge freedom to role-playing and is a real dream come true for people who longed for real role-playing games in their purest form. And it’s our game of the year.
