Some stories do not promise enough revenue to be told by the biggest developers. They are also too ambitious to be taken up by small independent teams. So let's be happy that the "middle class", the creators of AA games, is slowly returning to the market. These teams are more modest than the biggest fish in the pond, but can do much more than ordinary indie devs. Several gems of recent years, such as Life is Strange or Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, belonged to the AA segment. This year, the club was joined by A Plague Tale.
The game developed by Asobo Studio, the creators of such timeless "hits" as Disneyland Adventure or Racket Sports Party, takes us to one of the darkest places and periods in the history of Europe, to the medieval France, decimated by the plague epidemic. As a teenage Amicia, we try to keep our five-year-old brother alive at all costs and find a way to escape this hell on Earth, together.
The creators of A Plague Tale have played this dramatic premise for all it’s worth, taking us to a memorable and gut-wrenching journey of innocent children through a hideous world. Although there are some spots in the mechanics that lack “AAA polish” due to the budget constraints, the atmosphere and storyline more than make up for it, and the behavior of rat swarms can make a striking impression. If it is primarily emotions you are looking for in video games, you will not walk away disappointed after playing Innocence.
