The best Fallout 4 mods – Volume 2 (January 2017)
The modding community is Fallout 4’s lifeline these days. We’ve picked a dozen mods to make your return to the post-apocalyptic wasteland much more bearable.
Although Fallout 4 is more than a year old now, thanks to the exceptional activity of the game’s modding community it still remains on top, and has a couple more surprises up its sleeve. The last time we prepared a collection of Fallout 4 mods was in late April last year, so it’s high time for a new list. This time, we present a selection of various mods that affect gameplay mechanics as well as audiovisuals, settlement building, and NPC companions (including non-human ones).
Installing the mods
All of the mods we present on this list can be installed using the Nexus Mod Manager. The app can automatically install, enable and disable all kinds of mods.
If you want to use the app, you need to:
- download and launch the latest version of the program;
- wait for the program to scan your hard drive for games, or stop the scan and choose the game manually;
- open the „Mods” tab and choose the mod you’re interested in (it may be located in an automatically created sub-folder) and click the second button from the top (the green tick mark) – the mod will be enabled.
- NOTE: to download mods from nexusmods.com, you need to create an account.
All listed mods were tested on the latest version of the game (1.8.7.0.0), but there’s no guarantee that all of them will work on particular hardware configurations.
Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch – gameplay mechanics
Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch includes a complex package of fixes and improvements that mend various issues and bugs appearing in the game. The mod creators, responsible for the two sister projects for Oblivion and Skyrim, have once again delivered; the list of implemented changes is very extensive. It encompasses almost every aspect of the game – from gameplay mechanics, through quests and items, to NPCs. What’s more, Unofficial Patch was optimized to work together with various other mods. The authors made sure that the each and every modification is “safe”, e.g. it won’t have a negative impact on the game’s stability.

DEF_Interface
DEF_Interface introduces significant changes to the interface, modifying both its complexity and clarity. The mod affects not only the standard FPP/TPP view, but also barter and crafting screens, as well as Pip-Boy. No more complaining on mess and problems with inventory management – thanks to the new tabs (i.e. for notes, holotapes, and keys) everything you need can be found in a matter of seconds. What’s important, the mod has no known issues with other popular inventory sorting mods.

Everyone’s Best Friend – companions
Everyone’s Best Friend is, according to many, THE best mod for Fallout 4. It enables you to scour through the ruins of post-apocalyptic Boston together with a living icon of the series, Deadmeat, and one more companion of your choice. Justifying the decision to create it, the author of the mod points out that there’s a number of “vague inconsistencies” in the game code, which clearly suggest that, at least at some point, the devs wanted to include Dogmeat as an additional, full-fledged companion. Still, if you’re one of the people who cried when they had to leave good old Dogmeat behind to join forces with (the superior firepower of) Paladin Danse, this is a mod for you.

Ellen – the cartographer
Ellen – the cartographer is a mod for those of you who are long past vanilla Fallout 4 companions. It introduces a new (and wonderfully-designed) companion – Ellen. To recruit her, you simply need to visit Dugout Inn in Diamond City. The creator of the mod has done a really good job, seeing as there are more than 1200 dialogue lines recorded for the character of Ellen. What’s especially noteworthy is the unique perk of our new companion – The Explorer will uncover all available locations on the map.

Ponytail Hairstyles by Azar v2.0
Ponytail Hairstyles is a classic mod for those of you who put esthetics above all else. It features 27 new hairstyles – all of them female, but they also work on male characters. Who said guys can’t be pretty if the want to?

Enhanced Blood Textures
As the name of the mod suggests, Enhanced Blood Textures improves textures and visual effects of blood spill, something the world of Fallout 4 is certainly full of. Another “aesthetic” mod.

Better Settlers
Better Settlers affects, well, the settlers. It improves and expands (by adding more than 160 characters!) the pool of available settlers. The mod is a must-have for those of you who wish to become a manager of a settlement (or a town) in the hostile Boston wasteland. Finding two residents with identical looks (or character) will be almost impossible with this mod.

Darker Nights
Darker Nights is a mod enabling you to „manage” in-game nights. It offers a wide spectrum of options, beginning with seven different darkness modes, through NPC perception at night (how quickly we’re going to be discovered when sneaking in the night), and all the way to permanight mode.

Place Everywhere
Place Everywhere is an incredibly simple and useful mod. It allows you to build wherever you please – no more inaccessible locations. Additionally, it offers the option to move even theoretically immovable objects, such as a power armor station.

Longer Power Lines
Another mod that is brilliant in its simplicity. Longer Power Lines enables you to create… longer (up to three times) power supply lines – a perfect remedy for the frustrated architects whose sprawling designs suffer from lack of juice.

Quieter Settlements
A large settlement requires large amounts of power generators and defense towers, both of which are noisy, to say the least. Here’s where Quieter Settlements mod comes in, enabling you to reduce industrial noise levels down to 50, 25, 10, or even 0% of their usual loudness. Music to the ears of any mayor.

More Where That Came From – Diamond City Radio Edition
Here’s something special to end our selection: More Where That Came From – Diamond City Radio Edition. The mod introduces a new soundtrack, featuring a whooping 111 tracks that match the setting and atmosphere of the game. Mister Five by Five, A Fine Romance, I Don’t Want to See Tomorrow – these are just some of the hits offered by the mod. Oh, and one more thing – the mod enables you to completely shut off Travis.
