Doom 4. Missing in action – the most anticipated games lost in development hell
Table of Contents
Duke Nukem Forever finally got released after all these years. Is Doom 4, simply titled as Doom, amongst those ‘forever developed’ titles that we can’t seem to get our hands on perhaps? Summing up all that we now about the new game from id Software, one could write a thrilling novel full of plot twists, ruthless cuts, and mysterious delays. Don’t abandon hope, those who await the game - Doom shall be upon us someday! It will just take some time… surely.
Twas’ august of 2007 (nearly 7 and a half years ago) when John Carmac has announced that there are plans to create the new Doom. Nearly 10 months later, as the company has informed us, the game was being made. A year has passed, we got to know several trivial details, when all of a sudden, one of the actors responsible for the mocap, has revealed a shocking bit of information – the game was to depict a struggle of humans and soldiers fighting in a post-apocalyptic world. Shock, awe and disbelief. Am I right? The story continues – 2010’s QuakeCon (the company’s event) was supposed to be graced by a first presentation of the new Doom… which didn’t happen, as the development team wasn’t ready yet at the time. The game was supposed to be ‘more awesome than Rage’ (according to Tim Willits, one of the higher-ups), and so we waited, analyzing the so-called real screenshots, getting excited about any slightest bits of information, when finally, in 2013 it turned out that…
…the game was simply gone. The recent years were wasted, and the game didn’t satisfy anyone, so everything was scrapped, and the production has began anew. It seems as though this time around the planning was much better, as QuakeCon in august has witnessed a 20-minute presentation of the early version of the title. As of now, we are certain that: the game runs on idTech 6 (Rage and the latest Wolfenstein have ran on the previous incarnation of the engine), it is much more faster and brutal than Doom 3, there are many classic elements from the earlier games in the series, and there is this ‘old school’ vibe, but it’s more nostalgic than archaic. Oh, and best of all – there will be a plot. Will there be a release date? Someday. Maybe next year.
