Improved Turret Modes is a mod for X4: Foundations, created by iforgotmysocks.
Description (in author’s own words):
Adds and improves target selection logic of turret modes for npc ships and the playership and fixes an issue that leads npc ships with selected turret groups to prioritize other targets, ignoring their turret settings.
Fair warning before use: These turret modes are new in 3.0 and will hopefully be patched alot to function better in vanilla. With every upcoming patch this mod is expected to potentionally break, may become unsupportable, or may simply not be needed anymore. In such a case it can be easily removed without issues. I'll try to update the mod as quickly as possible when patches arrive, but given the weirdness of how turrets work i can't promise immediate updates.

Following modes have been improved:
Attack Capitalships:
?Previously: Just Capitalships (or random targets for npc ships other than the player controlled ship)
?New focusorder: Capitalships -> Station Parts
Attack Fighters:
?Previously: Just Fighters (or random targets for npc ships other than the player controlled ship)
?New focusorder: Fighters -> Capital Ships -> Station Parts
Missile Defence:
?Previously: Just Missiles
?New focusorder: Missiles and Fighters alike (what's closest)

Target selection improvements - in detail (skip it if u're not interested):
In order to not having these changes impact performance noticably i've been very careful in how i'm checking if a new targetclass should be added to the current target class (e.g. adding station parts to the capital ship target selection), meaning i'm limiting the checks first to a count check to see if 10 or less objects are left. This happens before any distancechecks take place. If the distance check succeeds i'm performing a line of sight check, to make sure turrets can actually hit it. As long as 1 of those remaining 10 or less targets manages to pass the check, the queue breaks to not waste performance and the next target group will not be added as the turrets are still able to hit the remaining targets of their priority group.
Fix of current target selection bug (skip if not interested):
Currently, turrets are given the "preferred target" of the ship when not controlled by the player himself. Turrets prefer this target over their actual assigned targetlist they're supposed to attack. This means, in vanilla a capital may choose to fire upon a hostile fighter with L - sized turrets and attack a hostile capital with M - sized turrets. This is now fixed so that the prefered target is still chosen, if it fits the current assigned turret mode, but if not we let the turrets choose their target from their actual asigned target list fitting their mode.

Installation:
Download the file, extract the improvedturretmodes folder and move it to your extensions folder.
In case you don't have one yet, simply create it at the base directory of X4, so for a steam user it would be: Steam\steamapps\common\X4 Foundations\extensions
Deinstallation:
Simply remove the folder, no savegame issues whatsoever.
