Darkplaces is an Quake Source port or engine developed by LadyHavoc.c, focusing on limit removing and improved graphics and user-end interface. The goal was to create a Quake engine which focused on improving the game's graphics, while being compatible with most limit requiring mods and levels.

Instructions:
Unzip the DarkPlaces file to Quake's main folder (for ex ample…x/Steam/steamapps/common/Quake)
Then find WinQuake.exe, create a backup folder in the main Quake directory and place WinQuake in there. Now you want to rename DarkPlaces.exe to WinQuake.exe as this is the file that Steam uses to run normal Quake.
DarkPlaces or QuakeSpasm?
Both options are incredible, but have different goals. If you want to stick to vanilla style then pick Quakespasm. It looks more like GLQuake but with HD texture support. Darkplaces is a beefy engine to give next get visuals to Quake with HD textures with Bump, Normal, Gloss, and Specular mapping, real-time lighting and shaodws, high-poly models, fancy weather effects and other visual bells and whistles. to make it more vusually stunning and more technically demanding.
