Some companies honor fan-made creations. Nintendo isn't one of them. The latest victim of this Japanese company's lawyers are mods to the ever-popular Garry's Mod.

  1. For some time now, mods containing various elements related to Nintendo brands have been disappearing from the Steam Workshop.
  2. The creators of Garry's Mod, i.e. people from the Facepunch studio, confirmed that this is the result of the intervention of Nintendo's lawyers. Earlier, there were rumors that a troll was using the DMCA procedure, but it turned out to be false.

Facepunch Studios has no choice - the company's employees are currently reviewing 20 years of fan creations for Garry's Mod and removing from Steam Workshop all those that contain elements from Nintendo brands. Developers approach this without much emotion. That was their comment:

Honestly, this is fair enough. This is Nintendo's content and what they allow and don't allow is up to them. They don't want you playing with that stuff in Garry's Mod - that's their decision, we have to respect that.

Of course, this doesn't mean that no mods with Nintendo brands will ever be available again. Facepunch Studios only controls what appears in the Steam Workshop. Mods for Garry's Mod are also available in many other places, so it's likely that some projects will survive, unless Nintendo's lawyers decide to fight with all similar sites.

It's worth mentioning that this isn't the sole recent assault by Nintendo on fan projects. Last month, the company led to the abandonment of development of the Yuzu emulator. Earlier, fearing a conflict with the Japanese corporation, Valve studio forced a fan to stop working on the game Portal 64.
