Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will debut on the PS5 on February 29, 2024, and the closer we get to the release, the more details we learn about the game. A new article prepared by Game Informer, suggests that Sephiroth, the game's main antagonist, will be more fleshed out than in the original, making it possible to get to know him better.

Sephiroth will be more detailed

From the description prepared by the aforementioned website, it appears that the character of the mysterious, long-haired man in a black cloak will be more refined compared to what was presented in the game originally released in 1997. According to Naoki Hamaguchi, the game's director, in Rebirth will be able to not only get to know Sephiroth better and observe how he sinks into his madness, but even sympathize with him.

"We felt it was necessary to have this very clear depiction of how he came to be the person that he is now in Rebirth. Even as a developer creating this game, seeing Sephiroth discover the truth and fall further and further into darkness – like falling from grace – and depicting this in his expressions, I could truly feel bad for him. Throughout the course of Rebirth, I believe players will not only grow to relate to and understand Cloud, but also Sephiroth through this game much more," said Naoki Hamaguchi

In the original Final Fantasy VII Sephiroth did not appear particularly often on screen, making him a very mysterious character. Although it was known that Cloud and his friends set out to track down the man, we usually learned about Sephiroth from the stories of specific characters. According to Yoshinori Kitase, the game's producer, the antagonist is expected to appear more often in Rebirth..

"(...) within Rebirth, we wanted to make Sephiroth this very clear antagonist and target for the characters to go and pursue through their journey in Rebirth. Within the original game, Sephiroth was not seen very much in the world map, but in this title, we put this element forward," said Yoshinori Kitase

During Cloud's memories in the town of Kalm, as depicted in the original game, Sephiroth was part of the party and you could see his power during battles, but there was no way to control him. In Rebirth this sequence will change and Sephiroth will be a playable character, who will even have a synergy with Cloud, it's a special mechanic used in combat, as announced by Teruki Endo, the director in charge of combat elements (we could see a fragment of such a fight in the game's trailer).

"When developing Sephiroth as a character who players are able to control in a limited area, we're still considering that you're able to play as this very iconic character. Taking this into mind, I really took care into providing the sort of resources and cost as equal to those of other playable characters into developing Sephiroth in a battle sense," said Teruki Endo

Finally, let me remind you once again that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will debut on PS5 on February 29, 2024. The PC release date is not yet known.
