Best Games 2020 on Metacritic; Persona 5 Bests The Last of Us 2

Metacritic has prepared a list of the best-rated titles of 2020. Persona 5 Royal takes the first place. Sega's game overtook The Last of Us: Part II and Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  1. Metacritic prepared a list of the best rated games of 2020.
  2. The winner was Persona 5 Royal, ahead of The Last of Us: Part II and Dragon Quest XI S.

Metacritic published a list of the best games released in 2020. The highest rated title was Persona 5 Royal with an average score of 95/100, followed by The Last of Us: Part II. The third place went to Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age on PlayStation 4 (the release on Xbox One has an average score lower by 2 points). In the top five there was also a place for Hades on Switch and Half-Life: Alyx.

The list includes games that received at least 7 professional reviews on Metacritic (before December 21, 2020). This is somewhat unfair towards some titles, as a number of niche but equally successful games were not qualified. However, the comparison gives some insight into what the game market looked like when broken down by hardware platforms.

The largest number of games that can boast an average score above 90 are found on PC - as many as five. PS4 can boast three titles, just like Switch. Xbox One is one better - four such games can be found. On PS5 there is one title that exceeded the 90 points threshold.

What are the best games for each platform? We will start with the PC. The best rated game is Half-Life: Alyx with an average score of 93. It is also an exclusive title with the best average (ex aequo with The Last of Us: Part II).

Top 10 PC games by Metacritic average

  8. Ori & the Will of Wisps - 88
  9. Hello 3 - 88
  10. F1 2020 - 88

The top ten games on PS5 are not that impressive, although this is obviously due to the small number of games available in the analyzed timeframe. Demon's Souls with an average of 92/100 is the best here.

PlayStation 4 has done better. The list of the best games is more diverse, although the average rating in the top ten is worse than on the PC. Number one is Persona 5 Royal.

In the case of Xbox One, the best-rated title is Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition, which shows the long way Microsoft's console has gone. From the device on which Japanese games were ignored to the one where a jRPG became number one in 2020.

In the case of Xbox Series X|S, the listing looks the least impressive. Few launch titles, no real exclusive bombs. Best rating was given to Tetris Effect: Connected.

And finally, Switch. Last year wasn't so good when it comes to games for Nintendo's console. The leader is Hades, although Ori is hot on its heels.

Full lists for each platform can be found here. What conclusions can be drawn? The trend of refreshing older games, combined with enriched ports, is becoming increasingly evident on PCs and home consoles. Switch, contrary to what some suggest, has had a much weaker year in terms of games, and Nintendo faces a challenge to make up for the past months to the fans. It's enough that someone doesn't like the Animal Crossing series, and the list of new exclusive games suddenly turns poor.

Also next-gen consoles have nothing to boast about. While on PS5 the situation is saved by a few exclusive titles, with Xbox Series X|S we can see years of neglect that originated in the last generation. If the choice of the console were to be based on the list from 2020, Microsoft would be in a worse situation.

However, we wish the owners of PCs and consoles that this year abounds in many successful launches, many surprises and titles worth paying the full price for on day one.
